Vasectomy technique

Under local anaesthetic and on an outpatient basis, one small incision is made without a scalpel at the level of the testicular sac (scrotum).  Both vas deferens are taken out and cut.  The end leading to the urethra is obstructed through coagulation.  Generally, the testicular end of the deferens is left unobstructed for the purposes of facilitating a reversal in the event of the patient wishing to recover his fertility in the future.  The wound is closed with one sole dissolvable stitch (does not need to be removed).  The duration of the surgery is approximately 20 minutes.
