This is defined as the persistent or permanent difficulty in reaching orgasm, as well as its absence or delay after sufficient stimulation and sexual excitement, leading to personal distress (anxiety, frustration, angst).
This affects approximately 24% of women of fertile age and 40% of post-menopausal women.
The orgasm is a sensorial and motor reflex which can be set off by both physical and mental stimuli. It depends on the integrity of the nerves in the pelvic muscles and the adequate entry of blood into the genitals.
Diagnosis is based on a detailed medical history and physical examination.
Depending on the data obtained, a hormonal and psychological evaluation may be indicated, as well as a study of the pelvic musculature and the possible involvement of the vulva, clitoris and vagina.
The treatment must be focussed on resolving the pathologies identified (hormones, pelvic floor exercises, etc) and all the disorders present in the sexual function.
