In spite of the fact that approximately 40% of women show one or more disorders in sexual function, only recently have we begun to study the problem with greater scientific rigor. Knowledge of male sexuality is currently more advanced, due in all probability to the comparative ease of its study and the fact that its development has been favourably met with effective treatment. The difficulty that the study of human sexuality brings is based on the many factors that affect the human body at different levels. One of the most complex and essential of them all is the control that the brain has over the sexual functions and in this field there is still a lack of methodology applicable to clinical practice with the appropriate scientific rigor.
The low percentage of women consulting their physicians about sexual dysfunctions may be a key factor in the slow progress this field has made, as well as the physician's passivity to detect these type of problems and the lack of appropriate diagnostic studies and treatments approved by the health authorities. In the same manner men did, women will progressively start consulting doctors about possible dysfunctions with the intention of improving their sexual life, the relation with their partners and, overall, the quality of life.
Alterations in the female sexual function are linked to factors such as age, education, physical and emotional health as well as bad sexual experiences and a possible dysfunction of her partner.
Sexual function disorders may appear isolated, even though it is more common that they present themselves along other disorders. These are the most common:
- LOSS OF SEXUAL DESIRE
- PAINFUL INTERCOURSE Dyspareunia
- LACK OF ORGASM ANORGASMIA
- LACK OF SEXUAL AROUSAL OR FRIGIDITY
