The testicle and the epididymis, which is the first segment through which sperm travels towards the urethra, may present inflammations due to infections from germs generally originating from the urethra or prostate or from undergoing trauma. These inflammations may pass unnoticed by the patient or may lead to an evident increase in size of the testicle and/or epididymis (in the acute phase it is sometimes difficult to differentiate), as well as pain. On occasion, these inflammations may be accompanied by fever and urinary symptoms.
Diagnosis can be made on the basis of the medical history and physical examination.
An ultrasound of the scrotum and/or the prostate may be indicated, as well as a urine and semen culture.
Treatment is fundamentally based on the administration of antibiotics if there are germs present and anti-inflammatory medication.
