Hydrocele

The testicle is increased in size due to an increase in the production of fluid found in certain layers surrounding the testicle and which normally serves to ensure the adequate slippage of the testicle.

Diagnosis is reached by means of a physical examination and the projection of light behind the testicle.  If light is observed in the anterior part of the testicle (positive transillumination) it is indicative of the presence of liquid.

On occasion a scrotal ultrasound may be required.

Treatment is surgical and is based on everting the layers surrounding the testicle for the purposes of ensuring they do not once again produce liquid.
