The Institute of Andrology and Sexual Medicine was founded in 2006 by Dr. Josep Mª Pomerol and Dr. Ana Puigvert with the intention of making their extensive experience in this field available to couples with sexual and reproductive problems.
IANDROMS wants to bring and innovative focus to the sexual problems of men and women. Andrology, defined as the field of medicine that deals with the problems that affect the reproductive and sexual capacity of men is an already long-established specialization. However, experience has proven the need of considering sexuality from a wider perspective, taking in to account each and every factor that affect women as part of a concept of an authentic integral medicine specialized in couples.
Women's sexual problems have not been deeply addressed in comparison with those of men. This is a consequence of various factors such as cultural ones, a lack of demand for treatments by the women affected by them, a poor interest from health professionals and a lack of methodology and effective scientific solutions. In the past few years, women's sexual dysfunction has become of great interest in forums about andrology which indicates the need to tackle the sexual problems of men and women with an integral perspective. As a result of this, many andrological medical associations and other specialized societies have changed their names in order to include the study of women's sexuality in their research.
Women's sexual problems are very frequent and in many occasions, much more frequent that those of men, and may include: decreased libido, difficulties in arousal and reaching orgasm or pain during intercourse.
Nowadays, research and the new clinical methods with scientific rigor allow women with sexual dysfunctions to be able to access new diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities even though there is still a lot of research to do.
There is no doubt that today's woman, with all the social and job-related roles she is acquiring, wants to enjoy a healthy and fulfilled sexual activity as well and to overcome the cultural and social setbacks from the past.
In recent years, scientific evidence has proven that reproductive and sexual problems are the consequence and also the initial symptoms of certain pathologies of great importance to our health, such diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, the metabolic syndrome, depression, etc.
In the same manner, they also lead to a series of problems related to the hormonal disorders that take place during old age.
The possibility of diagnosing and assessing these diseases and disorders by taking into account sexual and reproductive problems gives them a much more important dimension that they initially have, even to those people who are not very interested in addressing them.
Science and the change of habits have extended our life span and improved the quality of life as well; there can be no doubt that a healthy sexuality is desirable and an good sign of this quality of life, favouring our self-esteem and a good relation with our partner.
The Institute of Andrology and Sexual Medicine (IANDROMS) was founded considering all of the above in order to offer an integral sexual medicine, where all the physical, psychological and social factors are taken into account.
Here at IANDROMS we also treat all the problems that affect the male genital system, mainly in its sexual and reproductive functions.
IANDROMS chooses specialists in different areas such as andrologists, urologists, gynaecologists, internists and psychologists in order to practice the best clinical and surgical activity.
Reproductive issues, especially sexual ones affect the most private part of people's life; at IANDROMS we make of this a top priority and demand discreet, private and confidential service to our patients.
Besides the clinical and surgical practice, IANDROMS contributes to medical research and education and to the general population through different programs.
