Hemospermia - Blood In Semen

When blood is present in the semen, be it in microscopic (not seen with the naked eye) or macroscopic form, it is called Hemospermia. The semen may display a reddish or blackish coloring. Hemospermia is due to bleeding at any point along the seminal duct or its adjacent glands (vesicular, seminal, prostate). The most common origin is prostate inflammation or tumor. A diagnosis is based on blood, urine, and semen analysis, as well as a prostate ecography, and possibly other imaging studies. Notwithstanding, much of the time there is no perceivable alteration and the process must be deemed benign and attributed to congestion of the blood vessels of the prostate gland.

Treatment is determined by diagnostic findings (antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, prostatic anti-congestive drugs, etc.).
